PRODUCT PLACEMENT AND BRANDING DIVISION For North America, branding in one form or another has been around for decades. It is what gave the soap opera its name. Now branding of entertainment and reality shows as well as drama is big business. The standard 30 second spot for advertising has diminished in value partly due to PVR usage. The UK where reality series were born, out of the necessity to fill schedules with cost effective programming, branding has not been available to producers or broadcasters due to complaince regulations. They did use a form of product placement but compliance rules were tough. Recently the UK announced that it would now consider branding of products within broadcast content (excluding the BBC) as a method of funding. This is a huge change. International producers like ourselves have always had to be conscious of the fact that if we are producing for the UK market we cannot have branded content within our shows. Now that market has opened up for us and we are certainly embracing it! It now means that all our international shows which have a UK connection do not have to be re-edited for the UK market. We have been using product placement for many years and we are now going to integrate the two similar but diverse methods of marketing seemlessly into our multi-platform content. Branding is becoming a very cost-effective method to advertise product if done correctly. This is key. We strive to make sure that product is integrated within our shows subtly but still highly visible. We liaise with both broadcasters and marketing departments to find ways to bring together a solution which works for both. We have a wide range of product placement and branding clients on our books ranging from fashion and jewellery designers (for adults and children) to beverage companies and consumer products. More are being added all the time. Remember that using tools such as online, mobile and social media as well as conventional television gives content a wide range and clients have found that the natural publicity machine of a TV series or film brings their brand to the fore also. This is without the added cost of producing an ad. With our content reaching a large worldwide market it makes marketing and advertising budgets stretch further than ever before. New strategies are being formed in the light of branding becoming THE tool to use for maximum visibility.
